Paint Finish Selections and Surfaces for Interior and Exterior Painting
Depending on the manufacturer, house paint finishes come with various labels. Below are the common terms and recommended uses by Dunn Edwards Paints.
Interior Paint Finish Types
Flat/Matte
Flat (or matte) paint absorbs light and is good for hiding defects on walls and making rooms appear larger. Flat paint jobs are easy on the eyes since they do not reflect light and are often used for formal rooms and elegant settings. Flat paint should not be washed. Ideal for the family room, living room, dining room, bedroom, hallways, ceiling, office.
Velvet/Satin
Velvet paint has the lowest level of shine and also works well to hide defects. Also known as satin paint, it has a washable surface good for cleaning dirt or stains from heavy traffic. Ideal for the family room, living room, dining room, bedroom, kids' room, hallways, ceiling, office.
Eggshell/Pearl
Eggshell (or pearl) paint gives a surface the appearance of an eggshell, with more shine than flat paint and greater resistance to cleaning. This paint is also recommended for high-traffic areas. Ideal for the family room, living room, dining room, bedroom, kids' room, kitchen and bath, and office.
Low Sheen
Low sheen paint is similar to eggshell paint, but with greater shine. Ideal for the dining room, kids' room, kitchen and bath, hallways, doors, windows and shutters.
Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss paint provides a medium to high level of shine to an interior, making a room feel smaller and more welcoming with more shine. It is durable for heavy cleaning and ideal for the kitchen and bath, doors and windows, shutters, molding, utility areas, woodwork and trim.
